VPN craze sweeps Florida over Pornhub, behind a divisive law!
This year,
Florida introduced an age-verification law for erotic adult websites that has proven to be almost unenforceable in practice and will certainly affect the
adult work of many 18+ models.
As a result,
Pornhub withdrew from the state, and users resorted to creative techniques to continue accessing the site's content so they could continue their
porn jobs.
Demand for VPNs has skyrocketed in Florida after a new law forced the world's largest porn site, Pornhub, to withdraw from the state.
According to data from VpnMentor, interest in VPNs increased
by 1.150 percent within hours of the law going into effect.
Pornography and porn jobs via VPN
While Google Trends doesn't provide exact figures, the popularity of the term "VPN" peaked at 100 on New Year's Day, a significant jump from 58 the previous day.
Interest remained high even on Monday, standing at 82.
The law, known as HB3, requires users to verify their age by a third party, such as showing their ID or driver's license, before accessing pornographic content.
Platforms that offer
explicit content and do not comply with the requirements of the law could face fines of up to $50,000, Business Insider reports.
What is a VPN?
VPNs, or virtual private networks, are tools that allow users to hide their IP address and location while browsing. They do this by routing their internet connection through a remote VPN server. This allows users to bypass restrictions that prevent them from accessing certain websites in certain regions, including adult websites.
Florida is not the only US state to enact such age-restriction legislation; similar laws have also been introduced in Oklahoma, Idaho and North Carolina, all affecting jobs in porn too. Last year, Pornhub pulled out of Texas in protest of the legally contested age-verification requirements, thus narrowing the options for pornography.
VPN provider Proton reported on Friday that it has seen a significant spike in registrations in the
United States.
According to the company, such spikes usually occur in countries where internet access is restricted.
However, Proton later clarified that the increase was not due to general restrictions, but was clearly a result of demand for porn.
Pornhub has already had to block access to its erotic content in 17 US states due to mandatory age verification requirements, and as we can see, amateur porn actors and viewers are just adapting to the situation.
Aylo, Pornhub's parent company, emphasized in a statement that any regulation that obliges masses of adult sites to collect significant amounts of sensitive personal data poses a serious risk to user security.
The porn site has also been plagued by other problems.
