No electricity, no water - and sex for less than three euros in Africa. A visit to a slum building in downtown Johannesburg, where prostitutes have sex for money.
The blackness swallows the bright daylight, inside the building it is cold and humid. It takes a while for my eyes to get used to the darkness. The smell of sewage and urine hangs in the air. Very weird place for any sex job, even if Africa. Through a torn down balcony door at the end of the corridor falls weak light. On a table lies a pile of blue condoms from which a young woman routinely grabs two condoms without looking, and disappears to the right into the first room. Followed by a man in a suit.
"It takes ten minutes maximum," says 25-year-old Ntathu, who guides us to the roof of the building. She is one of about 20 women in leggings and tight tops who are waiting for customers down the street sitting on old chairs and/or boxes. The woman wears black leggings, a blue, tight-fitting top, the big bow on her head can not tame the wild hair. Well, it's very different from the erotic and adult jobs in the USA.

30 rand, equivalent to 2.30 euros, take women like Ntathu in the dark buildings for sex. This is a class higher than the price of street prostitutes, who offer themselves for less than two euros. In the hostels and hotels that are brothels in Hillbrow, a neighborhood in the city center, the price is a bit higher. "It costs between 60 and 150 Rand per hour," says Nthatu, depending on the establishment. "Some are posh, some are less. In some, the slender, fair-skinned women work in others the fuller ones. "Often the women in the hotels have pimps. Nthatu would rather work "free".
She packed her things and fled to the city a few miles away. A group of peers took care of her. "They gave me clothes and some condoms," says Nthatu. She was young and desperate and therefore began to earn a living through prostitution. Nthatu points to her temple: "When I was 18, I was attacked with a bottle, there is no protection, neither on the street nor here." She inspects the peeling blue nail polish on her fingers. "It's really not good."

The prostitution in South Africa is prohibited . Although there has been a debate on decriminalization for years, no law has yet been passed. Although the Supreme Court found in 2002 that the laws that criminalize sex work, are discriminatory and therefore unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court dismissed this decision and ruled that Parliament should decide on this matter.
